Just Add Rice book launch at The Book Lounge

Now that my book launch is over, I can do the grossly soppy ‘thank you’s. Here’s a post on the process, including all those that contributed to the creation of my new cookbook Just Add Rice – stories and recipes by a Taiwanese South African.

Just Add Rice is a proudly local food title by a first generation Taiwanese immigrant, raised and living in South Africa. It’s the first South African East and Southeast Asian cookbook produced by a local from one of the cultural communities and includes stories of identity and culture. It is a celebration of food, family and cultural preservation as an immigrant.

Firstly, thank you to my friends Wilna Combrinck (my book designer) and Thembela Mbatha (my publicist) from Quivertree, we launched our book! I’m so proud of us, and extremely chuffed with how everything turned out.

To my folks for the support and for helping me prep the food, my husband Kyle for being right by my side, carrying the loads and quietly helping in the background to make sure everything goes smoothly.

To The Book Lounge, what an incredible venue for our celebration, thank you to Carmen, Mervyn and the team for hosting us and serving Leopard’s Leap wines. You made us feel so welcome and I’m grateful for the extra hands that helped us set up.

Thank you to Pippa Hudson of Cape Talk for being my conversationalist for the launch as a continuation of our chat on food, culture, identity and othering that Monday. Check it out here.

To ClemenGold for their sponsorship for the glorious ClemenGold Gin cocktails, I was told to keep one of the empty bottles for Wilna (who’s quite the packaging nerd) to keep.

To my sisters; Jasmine who sponsored transport so special friends could partake, and for the miniature dumpling accessories. Check out her other food miniatures on her side hustle Whimsical Me. Nicole and Nadine, for all their help throughout the launch, preparing the food stations and decorating (including my face).

My cookbook chef assistant Amanda Seti, my highschool friend Natalie, who came early to surprise me with flowers and support, Ishay for getting involved and helping where she could, Alaric for coming early to help and making me laugh.

To everyone for taking time out of their Friday evening for a cookbook launch, I couldn’t be more grateful to have such amazing friends, you are all incredible. See the rest of the pictures on my Facebook page..
