Since I moved to Cape Town and discovered the Western Province Chinese Association‘s Spring Food Fair, I like to attend and stuff my face with Chinese treats and spend some time catching up with familiar faces in the East Asian community here in Cape Town. For this year’s event, I’ve been invited by the association to do a demonstration on some recipes from my cookbook, Just Add Rice – stories and recipes by a Taiwanese South African. I have chosen to do a cold vegetarian selection of three dishes for spring.
Entrance to the Spring Food Fair is free, and it costs R20 to catch the demonstrations. I’ll also be hanging out at the WPCA’s HQ (Chinese Community Centre) for the entire duration of the event for book signings and to sell my book at a Spring Fair special of R300. Join the Facebook event here for updates.
Food and Fun at our Spring Fair
The WPCA’s (Western Province Chinese Association) annual SPRING FAIR is taking place on Sunday, 7th of October 2018, at The Chinese Community Centre, Liesbeek Avenue, Observatory. Right next to The Protea Hotel and The Wild Fig Restaurant.
Bring empty tummies as we’ll have a wide assortment of Chinese foods and drinks for sale. Find the usual favourites like dim sum, chow mein, Peking duck, sweet and sour chicken, lotus buns and more! Also, don’t forget your shopping bags to get some groceries at our pop-up Asian supermarket.
Get your name phonetically translated into a Chinese name, a fun souvenir to take home. There will be games for children to enjoy, and a tea room and desserts for those who have a sweet tooth.
We’ll be hosting a few food personalities to showcase different East Asian cuisine, like sushi, Korean food and Taiwanese food. One of our long term members Robert Ting Chong will be showing you how to make some delicious Korean foods. Robert also gives cooking lessons at our community centre and encourages the younger generations to love our food culture.
Meet Ming-Cheau Lin, food blogger of butterfingers.co.za and author of cookbook Just Add Rice – stories and recipes by a Taiwanese South African. Ming-Cheau is a celebrated food figure and story teller in the South African food media scene and we’re delighted to have her demonstrate recipes from her cookbook at our fair. You can buy Just Add Rice at our event for a special Spring Fair price of just R300 (it’s retail price is R375), and the author will be doing a book signing after her demo.
For more information on the Spring Fair, find us on Facebook as ‘Western Province Chinese Association’ or email Sybil Li-Hunt at firstname.lastname@example.org
Join in on the fun, we’d love to see you there!
